A beginner skinning track from Mestia to Hatsvali
Six kilometres on a gentle logging road — the right way to try touring without exposing yourself to real avalanche terrain.
The old logging road from the north edge of Mestia to the Hatsvali base is one of the safest places in the Caucasus to try ski touring. The grade averages 7 percent, there is no overhead avalanche terrain for the first five kilometres, and the only tree-hazard is the two switchbacks near the top where fallen branches are common.
Allow two to three hours up with gear rental weight. Local tours start at 180 GEL for a half-day with a guide, equipment and a thermos of coffee at the top.
Ski back down the Hatsvali piste, or ride the gondola if your legs are done. Hot tip: eat lunch at the renovated summit cafe before you commit to the descent.
