A storm-skier's primer to Goderdzi
Why Goderdzi gets more snow than anywhere else in Georgia, and how to plan a trip around a Black Sea storm.
Goderdzi's secret is geography. The pass is the first high ground that Black Sea moisture hits coming inland, and when a cold front follows a warm Mediterranean low, the snow totals are hard to believe. Fifty centimetres in 24 hours is a normal January.
To chase storms responsibly: pick a seven-day window with flexible lodging, start watching the GFS 500 mb map a week ahead, and have a transfer booked that lets you push the departure by 24 hours without a fee. We built that flexibility into our Batumi-Goderdzi route explicitly for this reason.
In-storm skiing at Goderdzi is a particular pleasure if you accept the trade-off: visibility is often terrible, the main lift closes when the ridge wind exceeds 25 m/s, and the lower lifts become the whole resort for a day or two.
